Score: Cork Constitution FC 13 V 5 Kinsale
Venue: Snugmore, Kinsale
Date: Sun 6th September 2009
Cork Constitution J2 XV made their first game of the season a winning one at Snugmore, Kinsale on Sunday to advance to the quarter final of the Dennehy Cup. Conditions were far from pleasant with a strong wind and heavy rain for the entire game, more akin to December than the first week of September.
Con had a slight advantage of the elements in the first half and after some pressure on the home line wing forward Nigel Murphy got in for the opening score after 14 minutes, when he drove over from a maul following a 5 metre scrum. As handling was nigh impossible, both sides settled down to the forward contest. Con had the better of the first half with a strong scrum and the pack were well controlled at ruck and maul by scrum half Alex Ryan. Just before half time Con stretched their lead with a well-taken score by prop Dave O’Brien to leave his side 10-0 ahead at the break.
Kinsale battled hard in the second period with the aid of the conditions, but Con added to their total with a penalty from a rare break out when Rob Johnson kicked the points from 22 metres. Kinsale got some reward for their second half effort with a try a few minutes from the end by Ian O’Leary, but it was Con who advanced to the next round where they will play Dolphin who were 20-0 winners over Clonakilty.
