Venue: Model Farm Road
Date: Sun 27th September 2009
Constitution won the Dennehy Cup at Model Farm Road on Sunday after a well-contested final against home club Highfield who led 9-8 at half time. In the second period, Constitution snatched an early lead and stretched it to 21-12 before a Highfield try ensured a tense final 10 minutes.
Con had former CBC player Simon Barry at out half and his steady play and sure-footed goal kicking gave the team assurance throughout. He was also able to capitalise on a fine performance by the pack ably led by captain Gary Feehan at No.8.
Brian O’Hea and Simon Barry exchanged penalties in the first 10 minutes. Rory O’Sullivan struck for Con on 27 minutes when he finished off following quick hands inside the Highfield 22 with a score in the right corner. However, Highfield struck back with two penalties from O’Hea before the break for a one point lead.
Simon Barry and O’Hea again exchanged penalties in the opening minutes of the second half, but Con struck the decisive blow in the 48th minute when a cross-field kick by Barry eluded the defenders and Billy Newman was on hand to sweep in for a try that Barry converted. A further well-struck penalty by Barry on 68 minutes gave Con a nine point lead.
Con might have expected to see the final 10 minutes out easily, but Highfield put it up to them with a fine try by Stephen Daly in the left corner on 71 minutes. Highfield pressed hard for a winner but Con’s defence was equal to the task and saw time out for a notable win
It was Con’s 17th Dennehy Cup success. Afterwards, Captain Gary Feehan accepted the Cup from Peter Dennehy, representing the family who donated the trophy in 1972/73.
