Dennehy Cup Quarter Final

Score: Cork Constitution FC 29 V 3 Dolphin
Venue: Templehill
Date: Sun 13th September 2009

Constitution scored an impressive Dennehy Cup quarter final win over Dolphin at Temple Hill on Sunday morning. In contrast to the first round game the previous week, the weather was glorious – possibly too good for the players, who had to play at the height of the mid-day sun.

It was a splendid contest and not as one-sided as the score might indicate. Con pressed from the start with a strong forward effort, but did not score until the 18th minute with a try by Nigel Murphy. Rob Johnson landed the conversion for 7-0. Five minutes before the break Alex Ryan put Rory O’Sullivan in from a neat blind side move with captain, Gary Feehan. 12-0 to Con at the break.

Dolphin started the second half strongly and a score would have changed the complexion of the game, but Con’s defence was excellent and denied them the breakthrough. In the event Con’s next score after 64 minutes by Dave O’Brien was crucial and allowed them the space to move ball wide thereafter. Dolphin’s Mark Long kicked a penalty on 70 minutes, but the final 10 minutes belonged to Con who ran in two further tries. Pat Hughes was on hand to finish a break by Billy Newman on 80 minutes, and in injury time Nigel Murphy scored his second try after a fine break by Conor Desmond. Johnson added the points to put Con comfortably through to the semi final.

The Dennehy Cup semi final will be at Temple Hill next Sunday against Carrigaline, who defeated Bandon at the weekend.
