Munster Seconds League South

Score: Cork Constitution FC 22 V 23 UCC
Venue: Templehill
Date: Sun 22nd November 2009

UCC edged out Constitution in this entertaining game on a weekend when atrocious weather prevented all other games in the county. The Temple Hill pitch was pristine – a testament to the investment by the club in annual maintenance work over the years.

Constitution played against the strong wind and led 15-6 at half time. However, two tries conceded at either side of half time brought College into the game. And despite Con pushing ahead again, they conceded a sucker punch with an intercepted try from the College line with 12 minutes to go and never recovered.

Simon Zebo kicked Con into the lead after 15 minutes and he converted a fine try by Billy Newman a minute later for 10-0. Kevin Kidney cut the deficit on 19 minutes with a penalty, but Cyprien Jouve finished off a neat kick to the line by Tim Kenneally to put Con 15-3 ahead after 22 minutes. Kidney kicked a second penalty after 22 minutes and former Con player Niall Barry scored a try for UCC in the last minute of the half to give UCC hope at 11-15.

John Gleeson scored a simple try in the 46th minute to give UCC the lead, but Billy Newman restored Con’s superiority in the 53rd minute with a try in the left corner. Zebo added an excellent conversion for 22-16. Con were dominating the closing stages and looked in control, but in an attempt to close out the game a loose pass near the College line was intercepted by College full back Willie Walsh, and he ran the length of the pitch to score the clinching try under the posts. Kidney kicked the conversion, and when Zebo’s last minute penalty went wide, College claimed the points.
