Venue: Towns Park
Date: Sun 29th November 2009
Constitution ran in five tries against Midleton in a slightly fractious game at Towns Park to take the Munster Seconds League points on Sunday. The conditions were cold and windy with and fairly soft underfoot.
In the first half Midleton had the benefit of the wind and took the lead with a Dave Hurley penalty after eight minutes. Conor Desmond put Con ahead with a try in the 20th minute when he finished off a counter attack initiated by Rob Clune. Hurley retrieved the lead for Midleton with a second penalty five minutes later. Gareth Murray slid in for a try in the 28th minute following a scrum and quick recycle near the line. Hurley kicked a further penalty in the 40th minute, but Con attacked from the kick off and Robert Clune found a gap to score a fine try to leave Con 15-9 ahead at the break.
Billy Newman extended Con’s lead three minutes after the resumption with a strong run to the corner. Hurley kept Midleton in the hunt with a fourth penalty in the 53rd minute following a yellow card to Alex Ryan. Con withstood Midleton’s best efforts for the following 10 minutes, before Keyes kicked a penalty. He added the points to a try by Brian Hayes in the final minutes, when he intercepted and ran 70 metres for the final touchdown.
