Score: Cork Constitution FC 31 V 18 UCC
Venue: Curraheen
Date: Sun 4th October 2009
Constitution Seconds got back to winning ways against UCC at Curraheen on Sunday. A bright opening half saw Con forge a 25-8 first-half lead. In the second period, UCC staged a fight back to 25-18 before two penalties gave Con their first League points.
Simon Zebo struck a penalty for Con after 5 minutes following a determined drive to the line by Tim Kenneally that resulted in the penalty award. Zebo converted a Matt Ross try scored from a 5 metre scrum after 20 minutes and added a further penalty on 25 minutes before College registered their first points from the boot of Ronan O’Sullivan.
Simon Zebo finished a good passing movement with a try in the right corner after 34 minutes and he added the points when Con added another try before the break after Peter Kelleher touched down from an unstoppable maul. However, College kept the game alive with a try by Mike Lenihan in injury time.
College availed of a mix up in the Con defence on the resumption as Jason Carton got the touchdown and Colin O’Brien kicked a penalty on 55 minutes to leave seven points between the teams. Con used their replacements in the last 20 minutes and Killian O’Connor was unlucky not to be awarded a try as the referee was unsighted (unfortunately no video official on duty at Curraheen!). In the event the pressure brought two further penalty chances that Simon Zebo converted to leave the final score 31-18 to Constitution.
